Abacus
The flat slab atop the capital which supports the architrave.
Annulet
A small architectural moulding or ridge which forms a horizontal band or fillet encircling a column.
Anthemion
A Classical Greek ornamental design of alternating motifs resembling clusters of narrow leaves or honey suckle flowers.
Aperture
An opening or void in a wall offering a controlled passage between the interior and exterior of a building.
Arabesque
Derived from the work of Hellenistic craftsmen, an arabesque is a style of decoration characterised by intertwining plants and curvilinear motifs.
Bevel or Beveled Edge
The angular edge of a structure that is not perpendicular to the face of the fireplace.
Bolection Mould
A stepped moulding where the face projects beyond the surface of the panel or frame.
Bullnose
A rounded or obtuse convex moulding as the corner made by two sections meeting also known as a torus.
Capital
The crowning or upper portion of a column or pilaster.
Capital Moulding
The decorative detailing originally seen during classical eras, which sits at the head of the pilaster or column.
Cartouche
An oval or oblong shape with a slightly convex surface typically edged with ornamental scrollwork.
Cavetto
A concave moulding, the outline of which is a quarter circle.
Chase
The structure above the fireplace that contains the venting. Traditionally this was referred to as the chimney, however, with modern heating units e.g a gas fireplace, this is typically a purpose-built wall designed specifically for the units flue requirements.
Chimneypiece
A hood projecting from the wall over a grate, built to catch the smoke and direct it up to the flue.
Cinture
A fillet that divides the shaft from the column from the capital and base.
Clearance or Clearances
Clearances refer to the minimum distance required to maintain the separation of a heat source such as an appliance or vent and combustibles surfaces.
Corbel
A block or bracket-like support stepping out from chimneypiece to support the mantel shelf or other weight, but can be purely decorative.
Corner Blocking
The decorative panel found at the head or top of the jamb.
Crocket
Commonly found in Gothic Architecture, a Crocket is a small, independent decorative element usually depicting leaves, flowers or bunches of foliage which project outwards from the vertical mouldings.
Detached Column
A free-standing column separate from the jambs of the chimneypiece.
Doric Capital
A simple capital from the oldest and simplest of the three main periods of classical Greek architecture.
Engaged Column
A column that is attached to the jambs of the chimneypiece.
Entablature
The term to describe the frieze, corner blockings and mantel shelf as one unit.
Entasis
The subtle convex curved swelling of a column or pilaster in classical architecture showing greater diameter at the bottom than the top.
Facette
The fillet between the flutes of a column.
Fascia
A decorative insert, usually made from cast iron, that sits between the fire and the fireplace surround.
Fillet
Narrow flat band, used for the separation of one moulding from another.
Fire Basket or Basket
The grate which houses a fire and sits within the fire chamber or mouth of the chimney.
Fire Dogs or Andirons
Decorative supports for a fire basket.
Fireplace or Fireplace Surround
Often confused with one another, a fireplace surround is the informal name given to entire assemblage of fireplace elements (with the exception of the firebox).
Foot Block
Lower section or base of the column or pilaster that sits directly on the hearth.
Frieze
The cross member between the jambs of a chimneypiece.
Header & Slips
Non-combustible panels set between the chimneypiece and fire chamber to protect the former from the heat of the fire and ensure a fire that draws safely.
Hearth or Hearthstone
The non-combustible base upon which the chimneypiece sits, usually slate, stone or marble.
Inground
Facing slips that form part of the chimneypiece and which frame the opening, sometimes incorporating a contrasting coloured marble.
Inlay
The decorative device in the form of coloured marble in a variety of patterns set into the base marble of the chimneypiece.
Insert
A gas, wood, pellet, or electric appliance that is installed into an existing wood burning or open fireplace.
Interior Panels
Also referred to as the fireplace liner or refractory, the interior panels are commonly made from porcelain, firebrick or moulded cement.
Ionic Capital
The rolled-up cushion-like form on either side creating distinctive volutes at the top of a jamb.
Jambs or Pilaster
The vertical sections or ‘legs’ of a chimneypiece.
Keystone
Wedge-shaped key block at the crown of an arch to consolidate a structure
Lintel
The stone which spans in one piece the top of an aperture.
List
Vertical column between column flutes.
Mantel
The protruding horizontal ledge which sits atop the jambs (legs).
Mantel Shelf
A Mantel Shelf is more or less the same as a Mantel, the difference being that a Mantel Shelf has weight bearing properties.
Plinth or Plinth Block
The supporting base to the jamb.
Rebate or Rebate Depth
The difference between the inner jamb and outer jamb.
Register Grate
Decorative steel or cast iron unit housing the fire which conceals the brick fire chamber, originally developed during the 18th and 19th centuries.
